The practical mattress options are haul-away, a confirmed reuse destination, or a facility or event that currently accepts it. Condition alone does not settle the choice. Receiving organizations set their own rules, and El Paso County’s household hazardous-waste facility does not accept mattresses during ordinary facility hours.
Compare the routes before moving the mattress

Describe the condition honestly
Note stains, moisture, tears, odor, pests, broken springs, damaged edges, and whether the mattress has been stored outdoors. Do not wrap a wet or contaminated mattress and call it donation-ready. A receiving organization can refuse an item that creates a health or handling problem.
Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity’s current ReStore rules specifically exclude mattresses and box springs. That does not mean every reuse program has the same policy, but it shows why you should verify a local recipient rather than assume a general furniture donor will take bedding.
Measure the route before bending or dragging
Mattresses flex, which can help at a corner but can also block your view and shift weight without warning. Measure the mattress and box spring separately. Check the bed frame, door, hall, stair turn, ceiling, exterior gate, and distance to truck parking.
Remove bedding and small items from the route. Do not place the mattress where it blocks an exit or rests against a heat source. If you use a protective bag, ask whether the hauling team or destination has a material or sealing requirement. Do not use a bag to hide moisture, pests, or damage.
Questions to ask any provider or facility
- Do you accept the mattress size and condition I have?
- Are box springs, frames, or adjustable bases treated separately?
- Must the item be bagged, dry, curbside, or accessible in a garage?
- Are pickup, event, residency, appointment, or quantity rules in effect?
- What happens if the item is declined after inspection?
- Are there current fees or weight limits?
Use the county page for current event rules
El Paso County’s 2026 household hazardous-waste page says mattresses and box springs are not accepted at the facility during regular operations and directs residents to the Clean Sweep event page for current dates. Event rules can change, so check the county page close to the day you plan to go. Do not apply an old flyer or a rule from another county to a Fountain household.
What to tell the hauling team
Share the mattress size, count, condition, room, floor, stairs, and whether the load includes a box spring, platform, frame, or adjustable base. Mention any contamination or pest concern before the visit. Review the mattress removal summary and use the published contact details when you are ready.
